Phatra Securities shares fell Bt1.50 to Bt40 yesterday following confirmation that its business partner Merrill Lynch is seeking to re-enter stockbroking in Thailand.

Merrill Lynch wants to buy Apex Securities' brokerage licence from Adkinson Securities.

Adkinson told the Stock Exchange of Thailand it had agreed to sell the licence and would do so in the fourth quarter. It did not name the buyer.

If Merrill Lynch buys a licence, it will no longer need a Thai-based partner.

Export data clarified

The Commerce Ministry insisted yesterday last month's year-on-year export growth of 17.9 per cent resulted from increased volume, and not the re-export of two nuclear reactors.

Ministry spokesman Krisda Piampongsant said the country had registered high orders during the last 10 days of August thanks to baht stabilisation and problems in China. The reactors are worth Bt748 million, insufficient to account for the growth, he said.

The Customs Department said actual export growth last month was 6 per cent year on year. It calculates its figures on customs-cleared exports, which are about 95 per cent of all foreign sales.

Dusit in Egypt

Dusit Hotels and Resorts yesterday announced it and an Egyptian developer, United, would build a hotel, residence and spa in New Cairo district.

The Dusit Thani Lake View development will cater to wealthy Egyptians and expats.

Lake View developer Emad el Hazek said the resort would attract holidaymakers from the US and Europe. The first phase is a 203-room hotel and will open in June next year. The second phase is a serviced apartment.

The development will also have a spa and wellness centre and a country club.
