Search for Thais to carry Olympic torch

The Lenovo Group and The Nation are jointly hosting a contest for two Thais to take part in the chain of torchbearers for the Beijing Olympics when the torch reaches Bangkok next April.

The two winners will join a group of noted Thai athletes who will carry the Olympic torch, due to be lit in Olympia, Greece, in March and relayed around the world before reaching Beijing on August 8 to mark the start of the Olympic Games.

Interested people should log on to http://www.lenovotorch.com/international/th/register.aspx and submit about 100 words in answer to two questions:

1/ In what ways do you personify 'new thinking' in your community?

2/ In what ways will the 2008 Beijing Olympic Torch Relay assist you personally in further spreading these values within your community?

The selection criteria was developed from requirements set by the Beijing Organising Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad.

These were: to uphold the Olympic Spirit and be dedicated to the Olympic movement; to support the Beijing Olympics; be distinguished for remarkable feats in his/her profession or community or have a personal story that can inspire or motivate oth¬ers; be willing and dedicated to community services, and be distinguished for contributions to the Olympic movement or for an extraordinary performance at past Olympic Games.

Lenovo Group, a leading manufacturer of computer PCs and notebooks is organising the campaign in a number of Asian cities looking for "new world thinkers" - people who are innovative and can find creative solutions to bring about global change.

The soughtfor qualities include being motivated (inspiring the community to achieve goals and conquer obstacles), provocative (disregarding traditional boundaries in carrying out a great and difficult endeavour), imaginative (thinking "outside the box"), individualistic (demonstrating independence in both their thoughts and their actions) and explorative (seeking new ways of doing and achieving things).

Applications are open until Sunday (Sept 30).
