Thai NGOs join Burma protest

A group of non-governmental organisations has demanded the government send a clear signal to Burma where tens of thousands of monks and civilians have joined anti-junta demonstrations.

"Thailand, as a neighbour and fellow member of Asean, should send a clear message to the Burmese military junta, opposing the use of

all forms of violence against the demonstrators and calling for the immediate release of Aung San Suu Kyi and other political prisoners," the statement from the Thai NGO Coordinating Committee on Development said.

Signed by chairman Jon Ungphakorn, it added Thailand must take action and ask the junta to announce urgent measures for the establishment of democracy in Burma.

The group said if the government remained silent and allowed the situation to get out of hand, it had to be ready to receive hundreds of thousands or even millions of Burmese refugees from across the border.

"We fervently hope the campaign is successful and devoid of bloodshed," the statement added.
