Speaking at a ministry seminar, Education Minister Wijit Srisaan said the projects were divided into seven different fields including compulsory education to Grade 9 level for more students as well as expanded teaching of Thai language in Islamic classes.

The seven development fields were security and training for government teachers; guarantees for the basic quality of all schools; upgraded curriculum; expansion of education to compulsory and university levels; more religious teaching in Buddhism and Islam; vocational training and the provision of employment opportunities; and the strengthening of social and religious groups and the participation of the local private and public sectors.

The Bt16.7-billion sum, including budgets for regular projects earmarked until the end of this year, is for a four-year period.

One of the projects is the upgrading of a Prince of Songkhla University campus in Pattani to separate university status.
