Highlights of the week: martial law to be partly lifted

The Council for National Security will propose to the National Legislative Assembly this week that martial law be lifted in 11 provinces.

But the junta will seek an extension of martial law in three border provinces in the Northeast: Nakhon Phanom, Nong Khai and Mukdahan.

Cabinet reshuffle in the works?

A Cabinet reshuffle appears to be looming following the resignation of two ministers in recent days who were found to have exceeded the 5-per-cent limit on shareholdings. Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont said he would consult with his ministers and others before deciding whether to change his Cabinet line-up or not.

Surayud is also expected to appoint Army Commander-in-Chief General Sonthi Boonyaratglin as a deputy prime minister in charge of security affairs, after he retires next Sunday.

Saman chan to join chat thai?

Undecided politicians seeking a new party, like those in the Saman Chan group led by Suwit Khunkitti and Pinij Charusombat, may reveal this week whether they will set up a new party, or merge with the Chat Thai Party, as has been reported. Meanwhile, veteran politicians General Chavalit Yongchaiyudh and Chalerm Yoobamrung are also expected to clarify whether they will join the People Power Party or the Ruam Jai Thai Chat Pattana group.
