Juvenile Observation and Protection Department director general Charan Pakdeethanakul presided over the launch of "Sang Porkrua Sang Acheep" (Create Chefs, Create Vocation) - a project under which 10 juveniles will be given the opportunity to train with professional chefs in both theory and practice.
The youths - who will practice at the Naval Supply Department's culinary school - were chosen from some 100 applicants from Ban Metta, Ban Karuna, Ban Pranee and Ban Kanchanapisek remand homes. The applicants, all aged over 18, underwent a series of written exams including subjects such as mathematics, Thai language and psychology. The project was initiated to help juveniles turn a new leaf when they leave the centres. Only juveniles who had not committed serious crimes were allowed to apply.
A 20yearold participant Art, (not his real name), said that he had completed a course in baking at Ban Kanchanapisek before joining the project and hopes to open a restaurant or work as a cook after he gets out in seven years.
Another participant Nat, 19, (not her real name), said that though she had never cooked before, she was hoping to learn. She too hopes to open an eatery or work as a cook once she gets out.
