Support grows for Sonthi to become deputy PM

Politicians Sunday voiced support to a possible appointment of Council for National Security chief General Sonthi Boonyaratglin as deputy prime minister oversees security.

Democrat Party secretary-general Suthep Thaugsuban said Sonthi was suitable for such a post because the CNS' mission over security has yet to be completed from violence in the south to political harassment from old power groups.

"The security work will be more solidarity,'' he said.

He dismissed the problem of conflict of interest when Sonthi can dismisses Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont but has to work under him. "Today we have to think of country interest first,'' he said.

Sonthi, who as the CNS chief is empowered to replace the prime minister, is to retire next Sunday.

Meanwhile, Democrat spokesman Ongart Klampaiboon also expressed support to Sonthi's appointment, saying he is competent and was Army chief.

"Although CNS chief oversees security, the government is directly responsible over security,'' he said.

Asked if the move would create conflict of interest, Ongart said they have to show that Sonthi takes up the new post for the country interest and not for the sake of self interest.

Ruam Jai Thai Chat Pattana group leader Suwat Liptapanlop said Sonthi is suitable for the post.

He said there is a need for someone like the retiring general to oversee security affairs at a time when the country is in a transition period with the upcoming general election.
