Expropriation decree proposed to solve noise problem

The tri-partite committee to solve noise pollution at Suvarnabhumi Airport proposed an executive decree to expropriate properties located around the airport.

Transport Permanent Secretary Chaisawat Kittipornpaibul, as chairman of the committee, said after the meeting on Wednesday that he would submit the proposal to the Cabinet.

"The decree would allow the reimbursement of the government budget for the expropriation. However, we need a thorough study what the government would do with the expropriated land. Whatever, this would need consent from all three parties," he said.

The committee is represented by officials from the Transport Ministry, Airports of Thailand (AOT) which operates the airport, and representatives from residents.

AOT has so far paid out a huge compensation to some residents who agreed to move out of the areas which have been affected by the loud noise from aircraft landing and taking off from the airport.
