Surayud receives Armed Forces list; Prem denies advising PM

Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont yesterday said he had received the annual transfer order for the Armed Forces, including for the highly anticipated new Army commander-in-chief.

"I will spend some time looking into the list," he said.

The appointments are expected to be submitted for royal endorsement next week, he said.

Privy Council President Prem Tinsulanonda said he had given no advice to the prime minister concerning the military transfers when they met at lunchtime.

He stressed that the new Army chief "must be hard-working and very good".

It was rumoured that Prem, a retired Army general and respected figure in the military, had a say in the preparation of this year's military reshuffle, especially for the top Army post.

Defence Minister Boonrawd Somtas said no changes were made to the roster proposed by the Armed Forces before it was submitted to the prime minister.

He said speculation in the media on who would become the next Army chief, which changed frequently, was based on incorrect information.
