One killed as Ramadan starts

Suspected insurgents shot dead Sudeng Makamena, 61, a villager in Rusoh district, as he was riding a motorbike to his rubber orchard yesterday.

Published on September 14, 2007

Police said Sudeng was a well-known person in the area and was said to have a close working relationship with government officials.

The violence came on the first day of the holy month of Ramadan when Muslims around the world refrain from food and sex during daylight hours.

As part of the local government's effort to reach out to the community, Yala's provincial authorities are inviting Muslims in the area to break their fast at the Provincial Hall, where food and drink will be provided.
