Death rate below 10m
The number of deaths of children under five years of age has fallen below 10 million for first time, according to UNICEF. Global child deaths stand at 9.7 million per year, down from 13m in 1990.

"More children are surviving today than ever before," UNICEF chief Ann Veneman said. But she quickly pointed out that the loss of 9.7 million young lives each year was still unacceptable because most were preventable.
Of these, 3.1 million were from South Asia, and 4.8 million from Sub-Saharan Africa. In the developing world, child mortality is still high even among children in rural areas and in the poorest homes.
In developed countries there are just six deaths for every 1,000 live births.
