Make sure you power up with a great amplifier

After covering head units last week, power amplifiers are the next important item to think about when setting up a car audio system.

Make sure you power up with a great amplifier

A good amplifier doesn't just power up the audio source from the head unit, but also enhances great dynamic and acoustic performance.

Amplifiers come with different features and sound characteristics. Some might have variable crossover for controlling the low frequency at the subwoofer. Some have enough power for only two channels, while others can power up two channels and multi-channels.

Here are four power amplifiers that should be on your shortlist.

You can expect outstanding audio performance from the Alpine MRP-M450. This mono-block amplifier will deliver 220 watts RMS at four ohms. It has variable low-pass filter at 50-200 Hertz with subsonic filter at 15Hz - which is beyond the human audible range, making it suitable for pumping out the subwoofer. With clean and reliable power output, the MRP-M450 exhibits clean bass with the clearest sound, the way it's meant to be heard.

The Boston Acoustics GT40 is a 4x45W amplifier that enhances power and acoustic performance. It can perform multi-channel power at 4x70W or mixed optional power into three channels - 2x55W and 1x240W. Its power system ensures high efficiency and output stages, increased power with lower impedance and maximum dynamics and transient response with a signal-to-noise ratio of more than 100 decibels. The GT40 tends to have active sounding and weighty scale.

With the UK-made Genesis Dual Mono, which has long been established in the Thai high-end market, quality is complimented by quantity. Power supply provides huge reserves of energy (up to 500W) to accurately reproduce the exceptional dynamic range present in today's digital recordings. The Dual Mono's power reserves also provide ample current (58 amps) to give exceptional stereo imaging, soundstage and natural sound quality.

The Kenwood KAC-8103D features an ultra-efficient Class-D design for maximum output, plus Mosfet switching power supply to ensure clean, consistent power. The KAC-8103D features a switchable subsonic filter to protect your subwoofer and provide excellent sound guaranteed to be to everyone's liking.

Whilst on Kenwood, I didn't like the way the company pulled out of the home audio-visual market and turned completely back to car audio, perhaps because of the severe competition. I still remember Kenwood as the first manufacturer of DVD players incorporating the DTS sound format.

Anyway, go for one these four great power amplifiers. No excuses, guys.
