Alonso: Drivers' title is more important than constructors'

Monza, Italy- Rumoured to want to leave McLaren-Mercedes and willing to work with the sport's controlling body FIA in an investigation looking into an alleged spying case involving his team, there is little surprise that Fernando Alonso is not considered a committed team-man.

On Sunday Alonso gave credence to such considerations when he said that he cares little about the constructors' title.

After winning the Italian Grand Prix ahead of his team-mate Lewis Hamilton, with whom he is said to not have a harmonious relationship, the Spaniard told Duetsche Presse-Agentur dpa that winning the drivers' title is his absolute priority.

Alonso managed to cut the five point lead down to three by winning in Monza and now believes he has a good chance to lift his third title in a row.

"At the French Grand Prix I was still 14 points behind Lewis Hamilton, now it is just three. There are four finals ahead of me and I will continue to be fully concentrated and fight. I will try to win.

"I am happy, but I know that there will still be some difficult weekends ahead."

He said that problems surrounding the team, which is facing another hearing into the spying incident in Paris on Thursday and is facing severe sanctions, do not influence him. "It is not particularly important to me to pick up the constructors' championship. I prefer the drivers' title."

But while Hamilton has said that winning the constructors' title is very important to him, Alonso is only willing to concede that it is important for the team.

"Of course the constructors' title is important, especially for the team. But for me as a driver it is not that important. But if it continues as it has, then we are looking quite strong."

Alonso added that he did not worry too much about the hearing on Thursday. "There is no point in speculating. Thursday we will know more and till then I will say nothing about it."

The 26-year-old said that he could not predict another victory in Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium next Sunday. "Of course I want to win in Belgium, but we have to see how the car runs there.

"There are big differences between the races. In Turkey Ferrari dominated, now it was our turn here in Monza. The most important thing though is winning the title."
