Highlights of the week : Thaksin cash transfers face probe

The Assets Examination Committee meets today to discuss "a large amount of money" which former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra allegedly transferred to his overseas bank accounts shortly before and after last September's military coup.

Army chief's successor to be named

The annual military reshuffle list, which includes the successor to outgoing Army chief General Sonthi Boonyaratglin, is expected to be completed today. Sonthi is set to retire from the Army on September 30. Among the leading contenders are assistant chief General Saprang Kalayanamitr, assistant chief General Anupong Paochinda and chief of staff General Montri Sangkhasap.

EC to consider EU election request

The Election Commission will tomorrow consider the results of a meeting between European Union representatives and the commission's secretary-general about the EU request for Thailand to sign a memorandum of understanding to allow observation of the upcoming general election.

Ratchadaphisek case legal moves

On Wednesday, a committee formed by the Attorney-General will hold a meeting to study English law and legal strategies ahead of a bid to extradite ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra and his wife Khunying Pojaman to face charges over the Ratchadaphisek land case. The couple have been staying in London.
