Overseas-call move upsets CAT

CAT Telecom has filed a complaint to the telecom regulator about a possible impact from the watchdog's liberalisation of the overseas call market, a CAT source said last week.

Last July the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) opened up the market long dominated by CAT by granting the first overseas-call business licence to AIN Global Com, a subsidiary of Advanced Info Service.

True International Communications, a subsidiary of True Corp, bagged its licence in January, while DTAC Network, subsidiary of Total Access Communication (DTAC), won its licence in February.

They are all waiting for special phone numbers from the NTC so they can offer the service.

CAT uses the 001 and 009 prefixes.

NTC secretary-general Suranan Wongvithayakamjorn said the NTC would look into the case.

He also said the NTC had been informed by CAT that it would return its 004 prefix

next month for reallocation to any new overseas-call licensees.

Finding itself with only one three-digit prefix, 006, left for any newcomers, the NTC has asked TOT and CAT to give back some of their unused three-digit numbers.
