CFC imports to be halted

Thailand will stop the import of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) by 2010 to reduce the effect on the earth's ozone layer.

The ban will not affect local industry and is part of a plan to decrease CFCs by 95 per cent worldwide within 10 years.

Adisorn Napawaranonth, deputy director-general of the Department of Industrial Works, said the ministry planned to stop issuing permission for the import of CFCs by 2010 as part of the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer, which requires the international community to completely stop using CFCs by 2009.

The ministry expected to reduce the import of CFCs by 900 tonnes last year but could decrease imports to only 400 tonnes, said Adisorn.

"The ozone layer would improve if all countries reduced the use of CFCs and also met the goal of reducing carbon-dioxide emissions by 25,000 million tonnes. This could delay the impact of global warming," he said.
