'No linkage with politics' in naming successor

Army chief General Sonthi Boonyaratglin yesterday ruled out any linkage between politics and the naming of his successor, shrugging off a demand to pick his assistant General Saprang Kalayanamitr to carry the Army's torch.

The demand was issued by the southern chapter of the People's Alliance for Democracy on grounds that Saprang's leadership would guarantee the uprooting of the legacy of former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

"My focus is to nominate the next Army chief who can do the work with the understanding of the soldiers at the top and bottom levels," he said.

He said he hoped his successor would be able to boost the public's trust in the military and improve the professionalism of the forces.

Meanwhile, chief royal adviser General Prem Tinsulanonda refused to indicate his preference for the new Army chief, saying he had no involvement in the issue.
