Evacuations in Chiang Rai

Hundreds of people were evacuated to higher ground after flash floods hit villages in Chiang Rai's Mae Chan district on Wednesday morning.

Published on September 6, 2007

The flood hit the area around 7.30am following several days of heavy rains that raised the levels in many streams in the area. At press time, the water level had reached 90 centimetres and was expected to rise in the afternoon.

Banjong Yangyuen, the mayor of Chan Chawa, said the Kam River is also rising so he decided to order the evacuation.

"As of now, about 260 houses and 500 rai of land are under water. Hundreds of people are affected by the flood and many cattle have been washed away," the mayor said.

Local schools in Chan Chawa municipality have closed.
