Sumet, a deputy secretary-general of the office, will replace Dr Krissanapong Kiratikorn, who will retire at the end of this month.
The Cabinet also approved an Education Ministry proposal to extend Weerasak Wong-sombat's four year term as secretary-general of the Office of the Vocational Education Commission for another year.
Meanwhile, the Permanent Secretary for Science and Technology, Saksit Tridech, was made Permanent Secretary for Natural Resources and Environment. He will replace Pitipong Puengbun na Ayuddhya, who is retiring.
The appointments would take effect from October 1.
Natural Resources and Environment Minister Kasem Sanidwong Na Ayudhaya said two people were qualified for this post - Saksit and National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation Department chief Chalermsak Wanichsombat. But Chalermsak had only a year to serve the civil service thus Saksit was chosen.
Saksit said he was familiar with the department's work as he had some background in the field and would be ready for the new tasks.
