Plan to improve ICT literacy in all schools

Keartisak Sensi, director of the information and communication technology centre at the Office of the Permanent Secretary of the Education Ministry, said that benchmarks for ICT in schools aim to improve ICT development and the ICT literacy skills of students nationwide.

The standard is based on an ideal school that developed and used ICT technology and provided electronic courses to students.

To achieve the standard, schools must have a three-to-five-year plan for ICT development, ICT funding, ICT evaluation and staff to take care of ICT development in the school. Initially the ministry is providing high-speed Internet broadband networks to 5,000 schools and expects to cover 35,000 schools in the next couple of years, so all students will able to learn via multimedia systems.

The ministry also focuses on the development of qualified ICT people, ICT infrastructure, electronic courses, multimedia development and ICT equipment.

The ministry will provide training to teachers nationwide so they will in turn become trainers to transfer knowledge to improve the quality of ICT skills amongst their students. Meanwhile, the ministry will support teachers and trainers in developing their courses to allow students to do self learning via the Internet.

He said the ministry would provide funds to school to purchase ICT equipment, hardware and software to develop ICT skills for students nationwide.

The ministry would also utilise ICT to create security to keep students and others in the community away from illegal activities on the Internet.
