Slow drafting of organic laws could delay polls, says Prasong

Prasong Soonsiri, chairman of a committee reviewing three draft organic laws that must be passed before the election can take place, warned again on Tuesday that the general election could be delayed.

"The National Legislative Assembly has the right to scrutinise all articles and bills, and they may have doubts if some of the content is unconstitutional or not," said Prasong. He also said this could lead to having the matter decided by the Constitution Tribunal, which could delay the promised general election beyond this year.

"Please be patient," Prasong said.

He said some issues in the three bills covering the election of MPs, the election and appointment of senators, the Election Commission and political parties, may need to be decided through a vote by the committee that will be spending five days in Pattaya from Friday to discuss them.

It is expected that the committee will seek legal ways to close loopholes than enable proxies of the old power clique of Thaksin Shinawatra from returning to power.
