Thaksin faces second arrest warrant

The South Bangkok Criminal Court yesterday approved another arrest warrant for former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra and his wife Pojaman over the alleged concealment of the shareholder structure of SC Assets Co.

Department of Special Investigation (DSI) officials told the court that both suspects had twice avoided meeting with investigators to defend themselves against the charges.

The Supreme Court's Political Tribunal for Holders of Political Office in August approved arrest warrants for Thaksin and his wife on the controversial Ratchadaphisek land purchase for failing to turn up at the first hearing.

DSI deputy director-general Pornchai Assawawattanaporn, who was summoned alone without Thaksin's lawyer to hear the court order, said since both suspects were overseas, the DSI would co-ordinate with the Office of the Attorney General to start legal proceedings for extradition and other legal avenues.

Pornchai said the DSI will this month question SC Asset Co, after director Busaba Damapong surrendered to hear charges against her on August 17.

Pichit Chuenban, a lawyer for Thaksin, said Thaksin and his wife will return to fight the charges but only after the general election and the new government is formed. - The Nation
