Tamarine advances

[TENNIS] Tamarine Tanasugarn extended her time at Flushing Meadows by helping to stave off two match points to beat Hsieh Su-wei of Taiwan and Alla Kudryavtseva of Russia 3-6 7-6 (7-2) 7-5 in the women's doubles first round of ther US Open in Flushing Meadows, New York, on Thursday.

Tammy and her partner Tatiana Poutchek of Belarus were facing double match points at 3-5 in the final set, but turned the tables on their rivals in a match that lasted more than two hours.

The doubles win was a consolation for the Thai, who was eliminated from the singles in the first round by Austria's Sybille Bammer 4-6 4-6 on Monday.
