Proponents call rally as fears rise of amendments

A network campaigning against alcohol is calling on supporters of the Alcohol Control Bill to gather outside Parliament this afternoon.

"Our presence will send a message to the ac-hoc committee vetting the bill," Songkran Pakchokdee, a member of the network said yesterday.

A National Legislative Assembly (NLA) committee is due to discuss key sections of the Alcohol Control Bill today, which includes a comprehensive ban on alcohol advertising and a ban on alcohol-brand logos on other products like umbrellas, caps and mugs.

Songkran called for the show of support because he was concerned some NLA members would act like nominees for alcohol companies and drop these key parts from the bill.

Public Health Ministry acting inspector-general Dr Narong Sahametha, who sits on the committee, said yesterday he expected consideration of the bill to be completed by the end of September, after which it would be tabled before the NLA for approval.
