Kesine: Shot in front of pupils.

Kesine Timthep, 42, was shot in the head yesterday morning while entering Sasanasuksa School. An eyewitness said one of two men on a motorbike fired at the teacher. Kesine collapsed in front of several students walking with her. She was admitted to a district hospital but the doctors could not save her.

Kesine had taught at the school for nearly 20 years.

Meanwhile, arsonists set fire to five schools in Sai Buri and Kapho districts between Sunday night and early Monday morning.

The five schools that were partly damaged were Ban Buereh, Ban Phomoh, Ban Krubi, Ban Plong Hoi and a nursery centre in Thungkhla sub-district.

Schools and teachers are frequent victims of violence in the restive south. Last Friday a 50-year-old principal was shot dead and his body then set on fire.

In a separate incident yesterday, local resident Sama-ae Heng was injured in a gun attack while driving with his 25-year-old son.

Sama was hit twice in the face when two men on a motorcycle opened fire. His son Bukri Heng escaped unharmed.
