August 29, 2004: Apirak wins the Bangkok Governor race

Democrat Party candidate Apirak Kosayodhin wins the Bangkok governor election, beating Pavena Hongsakul in a contest perceived by many as a barometer of Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra's popularity in the capital.

Apirak obtains 911,441 votes, compared to 619,039 for Pavena - a difference of more than 292,000 votes.

Massage-parlour king Chuwit Kamolvisit comes third with 334,168 votes. Veteran politician Chalerm Yoobamrung finishes fourth, gaining 165,761 votes.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration reports that the voter turnout is 62 per cent, which translates into 2.4 million out of 3.9 million eligible voters.
