Yala children injured in gun attack on pickup

At least a dozen people, including three children, were injured in gun attacks in Yala and Narathiwat yesterday.

A group of 10 people in a pickup on their way from Yala's Bannang Sata to Sungai Kolok came under fire from an unknown number of gunmen at about 10am.

The gunmen were hiding by the roadside and sprayed rifle fire into the truck.

Driver Ahama Mani did his best to steer the truck away from the attack zone.

The attack injured all 10 passengers, including three children aged between and 13.

In Narathiwat's Rusoh district, border police officer Rusalam Duelamae was shot twice when he came under fire at about 3pm. The policeman was assigned to help with teaching in a school in the district. A group of gunmen with M-16 rifles fired at his car while he was driving home.

Police in both Yala and Narathiwat believe the attacks were not personal conflicts but part of the series of violence that has erupted in the predominantly Muslim region since the beginning of 2004.

Another incident took place in Narathiwat's Bacho district late on Tuesday when an orchard worker was seriously injured in a gun attack. Tohleh Sosa, 46, was hit several times after two men on a motorcycle shot at him.
