Ubuntu 7.10, codenamed Gutsy Gibbon, a community-developed, Linux-based operating system supporting desktops and servers, with embedded and mobile editions, will be officially released in late October.

Pathompol Suebpradist, senior software engineering head of G Softbiz, said the new version of Ubuntu allows developers to develop application software to support mobiles, desktops and servers. Software developers can now develop applications to support mobile devices including Nokia N800 and Samsung models.

"The Gutsy Gibbon is the first time that Ubuntu has supported mobile editions. It is based on Debian GNU'Linux with a focus on being user friendly. It is very useful for developers to be able to develop open-source applications for the public," said Pathompol.

He said before Ubuntu 7.10 is officially released there are two pre-release versions, called Gutsy Gibbon Tribe 1 and Gutsy Gibbon Tribe 2.

Gutsy Gibbon Tribe 1 is the first alpha release of Ubuntu 7.10, and with this new release comes a whole host of new features such as a user interface framework, the GNOME Mobile platform. Tribe 2 is the second official Gutsy pre-release, which includes GNOME 2.19.4 and version 2.6.22 of the Linux kernel, and is the first Ubuntu pre-release to install and enable visual effects by default.

He said Ubuntu 7.10 would be the first Ubuntu release to offer a complete mobile edition built with the Hildon user interface components, which are also used by the Nokia N800 Internet Tablet's Maemo platform. It will also include a new graphical display configuration utility that aims to reduce the complexity of configuring support for two displays.

The 7.10 release represents the next major step in Ubuntu's evolution and portends broader Ubuntu adoption in the context of portable computing. It contains all the applications from word processing, e-mail applications, Web browser, presentation, document and spreadsheet software, instant messaging and programming tools. Ubuntu will always be free of charge, including enterprise releases and security updates.

Developers do not pay any licensing fees. They can download, use and share Ubuntu with friends, family, schools or businesses free of charge. Ubuntu is available for PC, 64-bit and Mac architectures. At least 256 MB of RAM is required to run the desktop install CD. The install requires at least 4 GB of disk space.
