Twin turtle embryos found dead at centre

Thailand's first twin turtle embryos have been found dead in an unhatched egg at Koh Khram's sea turtle conservation centre in Chon Buri, a senior official said yesterday.

Air and Coastal Defence Commander RADM Chaiwat Sriakkarin said the egg containing the twin embryos was among those the Thai Royal Navy had surveyed in preparation to incubate 2,000 young turtles. The turtles were being bred for a mass release into the sea on September 23

to honour His Majesty the King.

Chaiwat, who went with senior officials yesterday morning to visit the centre in preparation for the release, was told about 10 per cent of the eggs had failed to hatch and had shrunk. However, one remained in a healthy-looking state.

On opening the egg, officials were surprised to see the dead embryos.

They have since been preserved for research.

Chaiwat said he had never seen or heard about a pair of twin turtles and it was pity they had died.

He suspected the embryos' death was due to either to the twins' "division abnormality" or that the officials had opened the egg prematurely.
