They achieved fame not once but twice in 2006 when they took the doubles titles at both the Australian Open and Wimbledon. Those wins elevated them into the top four in the doubles rankings. They continued their good form this year winning titles in Charleston and Strasbourg, before a left ankle injury to Zheng forced the break-up of the pairing.
Both players have also turned in some notable performances in singles. Zheng Jie won 2 WTA titles in 2006 at Estoril and Stockholm, whilst Yan Zi last week recorded some fine wins in the Rogers Cup in Canada beating Ivanovic and Dementieva before losing to Henin in the semi-finals of the tournament.
Yan and Zheng will be joining a powerful line-up of stars in the tournament, which already includes current Wimbledon champion Venus Williams, World No 3 Jelena Jankovic from Serbia and World No 18 Shahar Peer of Israel.
Jankovic along with Justine Henin recently became the first 2 players to qualify for the year-end championships in Madrid on the back of a tremendous season, which has seen her win 4 WTA titles to date.
Mr. Chaiyapak Siriwat, Chairman of the Organizing Committee welcomed their participation saying "we already have some of the world's best singles players in the tournament and it is fantastic that we now have two of world's best doubles players joining them in the PTT Bangkok Open. I am sure all tennis fans will be in for a treat in October."
