Biking around the Bhumipol Dam

Go back to the Bhumibol Dam again at the coming bike season

Published on August 18, 2007

Hot travel tip for the end of August: Rack your mountain bike on top of the car and drive to Bhumibol Dam in Tak province, one of the country's best cycling destinations. That's where the International Mountain Bike Championship is focused next weekend.

The 80-kilometre race begins at the Tourism Authority of Thailand's regional office in downtown Tak at 3pm on Friday.

On Saturday at the dam's reservoir there'll be an array of fun, family-friendly races, including "Couple Bike" for spouses and other mates, "Groupie Bike" for threesomes and "Conqueror" for youngsters under 16.

The event wraps up on Sunday with a showcase of vintage bicycles, a final race and some live entertainment in the evening.

The beautiful surroundings boast plenty of resorts, or you can bring a tent and camp in the park next to the dam.

For more information in Thai call (02) 436 4822 or (02) 436 4864, and in English the Tourism Authority's Tak office at (055) 514 341-3.
