Muslim groups to vote 'yes'

Eighteen Muslim organisations yesterday declared their support for the draft constitution and urged their coreligionists nationwide to approve the charter.

Representatives of the organisations, led by Samai Charoenchang, chairman of the Bangkok Islamic Committee, and Ahamad Khamthetthong, president of the Muslim Communications Association, handed a letter of support to Constitution Drafting Assembly member Chirmsak Pinthong at Parliament.

They said the draft ensured freedoms and rights - such as the freedom to practise the faith of their choice, and prevented state abuse of power.

Army spokesman Acra Tiproch said 300 suspected militants in the South who had been detained or were in rehabilitation programmes would participate in the referendum tomorrow.

"Some are eligible voters and have registered for voting outside their constituencies.

"They can definitely exercise their rights; except just those who have problems with house registration or did not register for voting in advance," he said.
