T Krungthai cuts costs

T Krungthai Industries, an auto and electrical parts manufacturer, is to reduce operating costs further to maintain its competitiveness after a drop in sales and profits in the first half.

Chumpol Techakraisri, assistant managing director, yesterday said that while the costs must be brought down to the rates in Vietnam, quality must be improved to match that of Japan.

"This process is necessary given that we have no power to bargain with large auto companies," Chumpol said, adding that the company had reduced costs through the introduction of the production system of its client Toyota Motor Thailand, as well as the just-in-time system.

T Krungthai plans to concentrate more on moulding activities to strengthen its business, but this required more funds in research and development, he said.

"In this industry it is a prerequisite to cut costs as fast as we can and in a continuous manner, or we lose competitiveness, he said.
