Rice guard
The Army will send guards to the North to secure the government's rice stocks from pilfering.
Pisut Chalakornkul, president of the Public Warehouse Organisation, said yesterday that the Commerce Ministry has asked for cooperation from the Army to help protect rice stored in theft danger zones, especially Nakhon Sawan and Phichit.
About 2,000 tonnes of rice have recently gone missing from godowns in the North. One million of the 3 million tonnes of rice remaining in the government's stockpile are kept in northern warehouses.
