Mahidol set to go it alone

The Mahidol University Bill yesterday sailed through the National Legislative Assembly (NLA), providing a clear passage for the university to become the first public higher-educational institute to acquire autonomous management.

The NLA voted 141 to 4 to pass the bill.

During the third reading, Education Minister Wijit Srisa-arn explained that the bill did not prescribe the establishment of an Academic Council because the university was worried it would be redundant.

"Mahidol University has always delegated academic work among its various departments," Wijit said in response to a question from NLA member Vallop Tangkhananurak.

Vallop was worried that without the Academic Council, the standard of Mahidol University's academic work would lose its value.

On questions about why the bill did not guarantee the university would not collect exorbitant tuition fees, Wijit said the government could always intervene.
