Director-general Padungsak Thephasdin na Ayutthaya was speaking after the Association of Banks And Finance Unions submitted a letter to the prime minister, saying bank officers who work in shopping malls on Sundays would not be allowed to vote in the constitution referendum this weekend.

Padungsak said all banks should give consideration to staff who work in shopping malls and allow them to exercise their right to vote.

"Our department is not ignoring the problem of bank staff who work in shopping malls. I want bank executives and the unions to understand the problem," he said.

The government has declared a public holiday on August 20 in an effort to encourage more people to vote in the referendum. The Finance Ministry and the Bank of Thailand will meet later to decide whether markets and banks will remain open on that day.
