State agencies may not get raise

Employees and heads of state enterprises may not get a pay rise - given their relatively high salaries, according to a source at the Labour Ministry.

"If the government has to increase their salaries by 4 per cent, it would cost Bt250 million per month," the source said.

State executives and employees have requested a salary increase following the Cabinet's decision to raise state officers' salaries by 4 per cent.

But, according to the source, a pay study showed that these employees' salaries were now 20 per cent higher than those of state officials.

The study found that 70,000 staff members with a secondary school education up to bachelor's degree level had an average income of between Bt10,000 to Bt24,000 a month. This was 40 per cent higher than the market rate.

Drivers at some state enterprises received monthly pay of up to Bt6,000, compared to Bt4,630 to Bt7,630 for drivers at government agencies.

A low to mid-level executive earns between Bt27,000 and Bt60,000 per month. There were 132,000 employees in this category. The 2,500 vice presidents at small and medium-sized state enterprises received between Bt85,000 to Bt115,000 monthly. Vice presidents at large state enterprise received Bt350,000 to Bt770,000.
