Longan push

The Agriculture Ministry yesterday kicked off a longan campaign, expecting to increase domestic consumption this year to 150,000 tonnes from an original target of 100,000 tonnes.

Agriculture Minister Thira Sutabutra said that about 4,000 tonnes of longan were expected to flood the market daily this month and next.

Thira said that this year, the supply of longan would be about 500,000 tonnes: 120,000 tonnes for export, 100,000 tonnes for the local market, the rest for drying.

He said domestic consumption was expected to rise to 150,000 tonnes, while exports should increase to 150,000 tonnes.
