Thira said that throughout this year, the total supply of longan would be about 500,000 tonnes. While 120,000 tonnes are for export, 100,000 tonnes are for domestic market, and the rest will be dried.
He said the domestic consumption is expected to be raised to 150,000 tonnes while exports should rise to 150,000 tonnes as the ministry plans to market the fruit in new markets like in the Middle East, India and Indonesia. The ministry has planned to offer low-interest loans to agricultural cooperatives nationwide to finance their longan drying process. Meanwhile, the ministry has approved the Bt20 million budget, to help finance the transportation of longan out of orchards.
