Danai and Suchanan Advance in Universiade

[TENNIS] Top seed Danai Udomchoke scored a double bagel in his third round demolition over Swiss George Kostallas in the Universiade men's singles competition at the LTAT National Tennis Centre on Sunday.



   The Asian Games champion, after celebrating his 26 th birthday on Saturday, wasted only 32 minutes to hand a 0-6 0-6 defeat to the Swiss, staying on course for his gold medal campaign.

   "I think he was quite nervous which made him hit a lot of erratic shots,'' said Danai who gave a garland to his mother Karnchana after the match.

   The Lawn Tennis Association of Thailand surprised him with a birthday cake. For The first time in many years the Thai star spent time with his family on this special day.

   "I was so happy because I was always on tour over the past six years,'' added Danai who will play 12 th-seeded Prima Simpatiaji of Indonesia in round four.

   "I will have a tougher match against Prima. He once gave Paradorn (Srichaphan) a tough match in the Davis Cup. I have to play consistently,'' said the top seed.

   In the women's third round, Suchanan Viratprasert from Bangkok University caused a big upset after stunning eighth-seeded Melissa Torres of Mexico 6-1 6-4 in 94 minutes. She next faces 10 th-seeded Zuzana Kucova of the Slovak Republic in round four.

   Men's doubles top pair Sonchat and Sanchai Ratiwatana, after whitewashing  Sri Lanka's Thilina Jayaratna and Rasanga Tissera in round two, dropped only one game to vanquish Czech Martin Schulhauser and Petr Olsak 6-0 6-1 in the third round.

    Sonchat and Napaporn Tongsalee, seeded sixth in the mixed doubles, will play  Zhao Jia and Tan Haiyun of China in the first round.
