Chonnapas is through the quarters

Thailand's Chonnapas Premwaew saw off Ashley Rowshyra Castaneda of Canada 4-1 to progress to the women's featherweight quarter-final in the taekwondo competition of the 24th Universiade Bangkok at Thammasart University's Gymnasium 6.

The Thai fighter, who edged out Senegal's Diedhiou Bineta 3-2 in the first round, next faces Russia's Gulna Fis Aytmukhambetova.

Fellow Thai Watcharaporn Dongnoi, who enjoyed the first round bye, also disposed of South Africa's Anelle Steyn 4-1 to join Chonnapas in the women's lightweight quarter-finals.

However, the country lost one of the gold medal best hopes as sprinter Wachara Sondee disqualified for the men's 100m final in athletics event, which takes place at the Main Stadium.

Wachara, one of the men's 4x100m relay team that won the Kingdom the first gold, finished fifth in 10.63seconds.

Compatriots Boonthung Srisang, the 2005 SEA Games gold medalist, and Sutat Kallayanakitti failed to make their marks in the men's half marathon.

Boonthung came 11th with a time of one hour and 11.52 seconds, while Sutat finished 20th in one hour and 21.32seconds.
