Heavy rains cause more flash floods, mudslides

Heavy downpours in Kanchanaburi's Thong Pha Phum district yesterday caused flash floods and mudslides in Tambon Huai Khayeng and Hin Dard, prompting officials to evacuate 200 residents. Resi-dents in 13 other high-risk districts were also warned to brace for floods and mudslides.

Local officials were dispatched to assist the flood victims and clear mud-damaged roads. A disaster victim's assistance centre was set up at Ban Prajammai School.

Meanwhile, forest floods damaged a bridge in Phitsanu-lok's Noen Maprang district, marooning 40 families.

Phitsanulok Disaster Preven-tion and Mitigation chief Boon-ying Khumsuphan said torrential rains since Wednesday had caused a bridge across the Ban Rom Klao creek to subside, leaving 40 families in Ban Rom Klao in Tambon Chompu cut off from the outside world.

Local officials were dispatched to fix the bridge and assist the stranded residents, while nearby villages were also put on alert.

The Nakhon Thai district chief reported that Ban Bor Pho Village was on watch of possible heavy flooding, with rainfall reaching 60 millimetres. If the rain exceeded 100m, the villagers would be evacuated, he said.

Meanwhile, the Meteor-ological Department reported that with an active low-pressure cell lying across the North and upper Northeast and the southwest monsoon over the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand, abundant rain would remain in the North, upper Northeast and the windward side of the Central and the East.

With the recent heavy rains, flash-floods and forest run-offs are possible, the agency said.

Residents in risky areas such as Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Nan, Tak, Loei, Udon Thani, Nong Khai, Kanchanaburi, Chanthaburi and Trat provinces should beware of possible flooding over the next few days.

Waves two- to three-metres high are also expected in the Andaman, and all ships should proceed with caution, the department said.
