Pongsiri Collapses in Round One

The Thai tennis team lost its first member yesterday when men's tennis singles No 2 player Pongsiri Niroj had to forfeit from his opening round match with Japan's Sho Aida at the LTAT National Tennis Centre on Thursday.



   Pongsiri sustained an injury while he was trailing the Japanese 6-1 6-7 (5-7) 0-4, forcing him to retirie after one hour and 32 minutes.

   His compatriots have yet to launch their actions. Top seed Danai Udomchoke receives a first round bye and will take on either Razian Rawi of Malaysia in round two.

    Sonchat and Sanchai Ratiwatana, the doubles top pair, also have a first round-bye. They will play Srilankan Thilina Jayaratana and Rasanga Tissera in the seocnd round.

  On the women's side, 13 th-seeded Nudnida Luangnam is drawn against Evelyn Zuagar whereas Suchanan Viratprasert, unseeded, is to face Germany's Lydia Steinbach. Napaporn Tongsalee and Montinee Tangphong, the fifth seeds, will take on either Olga Sarli amd Olga Vasileiadou of Great Britain or Chinese Liu Fang and Ren Jing.

   In the mixed doubles Sonchat and Napaporn will play China's Jia Zhao and Tan Haiyun.
