The meals will be prepared by THAI Catering, a division of Thai Airways International, which produced meals for the athletes during the 13th Asian Games and the Fespic Games in Bangkok in 1998.
Production manager Thanet Leksirirat says the experience of catering at these previous major events has convinced him that their services will satisfy the palates of athletes from all 156 countries that are taking part.
"We are confident of our ability. We have provided multi-cuisine, including Chinese, Western, Middle Eastern and Thai. Our daily menu has a list of 300 items and will be adjusted to meet different demands.
"Thai meals will be served every day. This is just because we want to promote Thai food. Besides different meals, desserts, fruits and soup will be served," Thanet said.
Thanet said THAI Catering prepared meals for 2,000 athletes when the dining hall opened on August 1, but has since increased the number to 10,000 to meet demand.
"Breakfast service will be from 6am to 10am, while lunch will be from 11am to 2pm and dinner from 5pm to 10pm. We will also provide special meals, depending on athletes' requirements."
The kitchen at Thammasat University's Rangsit campus has been designated for the preparation of halal meals, while the non-halal meals will be cooked at the DC2 Building (Rak Khun Thao Fah Building), where packed meals will also be prepared for the athletes.
Only 100-200 meal boxes were prepared each day initially, but that number will be increased to 1,500 from today until the games end on August 18. Each box has been designed to carry a meal weighing more than 2kg.
