Ad hoc/Where to put an "s"

Dear Dr English

What is an ad hoc committee? Please explain.

Somtawin Tungmunpanich

"Ad hoc" is a Latin word that certainly has a high degree of influence in the English language. Something that is ad hoc or that is done on an adhoc basis is done only when the situation is desirable, or when necessary. This means there is no advanced planning or arrangement. An adhoc committee is one that is formed when there is a need to do something specific.

Where to put an "s"

Dear Dr English

When compound nouns like soninlaw are used in plural form where should we put the "s"?

Saisunee Klaikhuntod

The easiest way to do this is to look for the noun in "soninlaw" or "daughterinlaw". The nouns in these groups are "son" and "daughter" so the plural form should be shown on these two words; sonsinlaw" or "daughtersinlaw".

Among the three daughtersinlaw Mr William has, he likes Beth most.
