August 20 is extra holiday for charter referendum
Thai government declared a public holiday on August 20, in an effort to encourage more people to vote in a constitutional referendum on August 19.
The cabinet decided to declare a three-day weekend in order to help people make the journey without worrying about missing a day of work, a government spokesman said.
"The cabinet today agreed to a proposal by the Election Commission to declare Monday, August 20 a national holiday," the spokesman said.
Finance ministry and the Bank of Thailand will meet later to decide whether markets and banks will remain open on that day.
