Narathiwat hit 8 times

A villager was shot dead and a soldier was injured as insurgents mounted eight separate attacks in four districts of Narathiwat yesterday.

Army private Weerachai Kaba, 22, was shot in the hip during a 10-minute shootout with an unknown number of gunmen at a railway station in Joh I Rong district.

Werachai and nine others were guarding the station when the gunmen opened fire at about 2am. There was no report of casualties among the attackers.

Two hours later a group of militants shot dead Aewae Marusoh while he was asleep in his house in Si Sakhon district, police said. His wife and two children who were also asleep inside the house were unharmed.

Police said there were also gun battles between security officials and militants in Bacho and Rusoh districts yesterday, but no casualties were reported.
