Bridges pledge

Bangkok Governor Apirak Kosayodhin said yesterday that he had ordered inspections of 13 iron bridges, while his deputy affirmed that the bridges were safe but needed some repairs.

Published on August 4, 2007

Apirak said all bridges in the capital were inspected and maintained on an annual basis, and more than 10 bridges over a decade old were already undergoing inspection.

He was responding to reporters' questions about the safety of Bangkok's bridges following the collapse of a bridge in the US city of Minneapolis on Wednesday.

Deputy governor Bannasopit Mekwichai said the 13 bridges had been inspected for major repairs, which could begin within this fiscal year - before September 30.

She said no bridges had structural problems, but some had problems with traffic-related sections such as the road surface.
