United deposed Chelsea as Premier League champions in May and both sides will be looking to secure bragging rights and perhaps a psychological edge by taking the first silverware of the season.
The match is also set to showcase some of the new talent at both clubs after a busy summer of transfer activity.
United new boys Owen Hargreaves, Nani and Anderson are unlikely to feature at Wembley and United manager Sir Alex Ferguson said the side that featured against Inter Milan in a midweek friendly could start against Chelsea.
Chelsea, who have signed Florent Malouda, Claudio Pizarro, Tal Ben Haim and Steve Sidwell this summer, could be without their captain, John Terry, who has a broken toe.
Terry suffered the injury in a friendly win last weekend and is a serious doubt.
Andriy Shevchenko, Michael Ballack, Arjen Robben and Wayne Bridge are all expected to miss Sunday's match, while Michael Essien, Claude Makelele, Paulo Ferreira, Lassana Diarra and Salomon Kalou are battling to be fit.
United manager Ferguson said he expected the game to be more attacking than the FA Cup final meeting between the two back in May, which Chelsea won 1-0.
"I think it will be a better game, in the sense that I think, possibly there was tiredness on both teams and I know that for some of my players, I couldn't get any more out of them.
"They did a fantastic job for us, the same players every week since the beginning of April, so they did a great job that way."//dpa
