Surin confirmed for top post
Foreign ministers from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations yesterday approved the nomination of former Thai foreign minister Surin Pitsuwan as the grouping's next secretary-general.

The approval came at the 40th Asean Ministerial Meeting in Manila, at which Foreign Minister Nitya Pibulsonggram proposed Surin as the most suitable person for the post.
Asean leaders will officially appoint Surin when they meet in November in Singapore and he will take over from Ong Keng Yong of Singapore on January 1.
